InnVision started in 1973 as a church initiative. In 1973 members of nine downtown San José churches began noticing that more and more people were sleeping in downtown doorways and that there was an increase in the number of homeless and at-risk persons in the city of San José. They decided to do something about it and through this the San José Urban Ministry was born. It initially started out as a small operation; at first, the Ministry only provided basic needs: blankets, food and support. Gradually, through collaborating with schools, federal and state agencies, civic groups such as the Gardner Family Healthcare for the Homeless, and foundations, the form of support offered by the Ministry expanded.

BEACON Initiative is "a public-private partnership with the goal of revitalizing Birmingham’s traditional commercial areas in a way that promotes the neighborhoods’ quality of life."” The mission of the initiative is to improve quality of life in Birmingham neighborhoods by promoting small-scale economic development, fostering entrepreneurial ventures, and adding jobs to the City’s workforce.

The Curley School redevelopment project is an initiative designed at renovating the abandoned Curley School in Ajo, Arizona for the creation of affordable artist housing. The renovation will allow Ajo to define itself as a community that directly supports the arts. Aside from providing housing for artistic individuals, the Curley School’s eight buildings, covering a seven-acre area, will offer 114,000 square feet of such amenities as classrooms, auditoriums, computer centers, community workshop areas and a gymnasium. The project is designed to foster a year round artists’ community through the redevelopment of an abandoned area. The project began in the spring of 2006 and is scheduled to be completed by February in 2007.

Project Row Houses is a neighborhood-based arts and cultural organization, with programs that combine arts and cultural education, historic preservation, and community development. Its mission is to create community through the celebration of art and African-American history and culture. Since 1993, Project Row Houses has worked to restore and renovate a neighborhood of shotgun-style houses in Houston’s Third Ward, and transform the area that celebrates the arts and African American culture.

The ARTS at Marks Garage is a collaborative neighborhood-based arts center in Honolulu that works to promote community and economic development through the arts by providing affordable office, gallery and performance space to arts groups and individual artists. Founded in 2001, the center is part of a social, economic, and aesthetic renaissance that is taking place in downtown Honolulu. The mission of ARTS at Marks Garage is to show how arts and culture can help transform lives and build culture. Its vision statement is: "hand in hand, let us join in building a community where every man, woman and child experiences the arts as the joyful work of life."
