Walton Arts Center is the cultural center of Fayetteville, located on Dickson Street. Its year-round schedule of symphony performances, Broadway shows, concerts and other theatre performances bring citizens and visitors alike to the city’s downtown area, and the Northwest Arkansas Symphony and Orchestra offers a regular schedule of performances. In addition to the exciting academic opportunities offered by the University, the Fayetteville flagship campus also provides a great variety of interesting sites and activities. The University Museum offers a special hands-on exhibit hall for kids called the Discovery Room. Sports fans will enjoy touring the Tommy Boyer Hall of Champions and the Jerry Jerry Jones-Jim Lindsey Hall of Champions, which tell the illustrious history of Razorback Sports. The Razorback Sports Facilities, Bud Walton Arena, Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, Randal Tyson Indoor Track Complex and Baum Stadium are among the biggest and best in the nation. Other area attractions include: • Washington County Historical Society located in downtown Fayetteville and provides information about the Fayetteville Historic District tours. • Arkansas Air Museum displays the area’s aviation history in the state’s oldest wooden hangar at Drake Field at the Fayetteville Municipal Airport. • National Cemetery established in 1867 and is one of the oldest military cemeteries in the South. • Confederate Cemetery established in 1897 by a group of Fayetteville women and located near Mt. Sequoyah with gorgeous views. The surrounding region offers: • Scenic Highway 71: Leading to and from Fayetteville, this heavily wooded, curvy stretch of highway is well traveled during the spring and fall by people anxious to see the changing of the seasons in full glory. • Mt. Sequoyah is the highest point in Fayetteville and is marked beautifully at night with a lighted cross. It is also the location of a Christian Conference and Retreat Center. • Devil’s Den State Park: Only a short drive from Fayetteville, this preserved State Park in the Boston Mountains offers spelunking, camping, cabins, canoeing, fishing, hiking and more. • Lake Wedington, located 15 miles west of Fayetteville, offers cabins, camping, canoeing, swimming, fishing and hiking. • Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park: This beautifully maintained 130-acre state park was the site of a major Civil War battle and is located just 13 miles west of Fayetteville. • Beaver Lake, located northeast of Fayetteville, this beautiful man-made lake boasts 500 miles of shoreline and is a popular destination for those who love boating, skiing, swimming, camping. |
