Fort Worth - Energy Conservation |
Texas uses more coal, more natural gas, more petroleum, and more electricity than any other state. To help reduce consumption, Fort Worth is pursuing conservation initiatives in public facilities that should serve as a model for private businesses and households. Through energy planning in municipal facilities, the city is working to reduce electricity consumption by five percent each year for five years. It is also exploring ways to reduce the impact of the "urban heat island affect," the phenomenon responsible for increasing ambient air temperatures in urban areas and, as a result, increasing energy consumption. The construction of energy efficient buildings is one strategy, and the recently adopted Fort Worth Energy Code will help promote conservation in new residential, commercial, and industrial construction.
