Fort Worth - Environment Print E-mail

When considering the future growth of Fort Worth and the needs of its citizens, protecting and enhancing environmental quality is a top issue. Fort Worth’s actions today as well as in future will have significant impacts on the sustainability of the surrounding environment.

Now the 17th largest city in the country, Fort Worth continues to experience rapid population growth. The city’s popularity is driven by abundant natural resources, a well-educated workforce, a world-class airport and surface transportation system, a favorable business climate, and a rich and diverse cultural life.

Fort Worth leaders recognize the significance of their choices in dealing with various public policy issues that are associated with this growth, particularly issues relating to suburban sprawl, traffic congestion, air pollution, and disinvestment from some older neighborhoods and commercial districts. To address these issues and sustain economic growth as well as quality of life, Fort Worth follows the principles of sustainable development. This approach represents a shift away from the development patterns of the last two decades that have led to high rates of driving, low rates of walking and transit use, high risk of traffic fatalities, and high levels of ozone pollution.

Beyond local development projects, Fort Worth’s commitment to sustainable development extends to broader initiatives, including:

·     Air quality programs
·     New solid waste programs that encourage recycling
·     A regional stormwater management initiative
·     Energy conservation programs
