Fort Worth and its citizens are dedicated to creating strong neighborhoods, a sound economy, and a safe community. Their shared mission is for Fort Worth to be commonly recognized as the most livable city in Texas. Fort Worth has changed considerably in recent years. Between 1990 and 2007, the city’s population increased from 447,619 to 686,850, making it the 17th-largest city in the U.S. Once dependent on agriculture, oil, and defense, Fort Worth is now developing into a major center for industry, technology, distribution, and transportation. To accommodate these changes, the city has embraced a multiple "growth centers" concept that promotes compact urban land use within designated areas and lower intensity land use elsewhere. This development plan offers a concentration of jobs, housing, parks, schools, public facilities, pedestrian activity, access to public transportation, and a strong sense of place. |
