Kansas City - Innovations Print E-mail

Kansas City has been pioneering neighborhood revitalization strategies in the New Economy years ahead of most other cities in the U.S. Using cultural initiatives to bring new life to areas of long-term decline, utilizing strategic, long-term visioning processes, and integrating preservation and adaptive reuse tactics have allowed Kansas City neighborhoods to regain their luster without suffering the consequences of gentrification or losing the City's historic flair.

18th and Vine Revival
The area is the historic heart of African-American culture in Kansas City and the home of Kansas City's jazz heritage. The city is working to recreate the 18th and Vine area as an attraction similar to that of its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s. The goal is to return it to a vibrant area with jazz clubs, restaurants, retail services, and housing. The city's investment is currently $26 million and expected to grow to $40 million.

The Neighborhood Prototypes Plan
The plan recommends specific actions to improve Kansas City neighborhoods and encourage resident partnerships in determining their future and delivery of city services. A unique neighborhood assessment process helps citizens target city services and specific strategies to their distinct requirements.

The Preservation Plan
This initiative highlights the importance of Kansas City's rich legacy of landmark structures, historic neighborhoods, and archeological resources. Strategies on transportation, urban design, capital improvements, and tourism complete the vision of the future from a preservation perspective.
