Initiatives to enhance the already bustling city center include:

Main Street Station
Main Street Station was named “2003 Project of the Year” by the Greater Richmond Association for Commercial Real Estate. Surviving disastrous fires and floods over the years, the magnificently restored Main Street Station heralds the return of passenger rail service through Richmond’s downtown area. The 102-year-old landmark will be transformed into a multi-modal transportation center, offering bus, trolley, airport shuttle, taxi, and limousine service.

Richmond Riverfront
City planners have long realized that, with the right combination of vision and opportunity,
Richmond’s urban riverfront could become a popular destination for visitors and residents alike. Today, events along the redeveloped downtown riverfront and Canal Walk attract more than 400,000 people annually to festivals and concerts. The Canal Walk meanders 1.25 miles through Richmond along the banks of the city’s canal system, a system that was originally laid by George Washington.

To compliment the vast array of social and cultural opportunities in the city center, Richmond is working to enhance its downtown housing options. Leaders in the development of downtown living include the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority and Venture Richmond.  Thanks to their efforts, the city center offers some of the most diverse lifestyle opportunities in the region. One-of-a-kind residences are emerging all over downtown. Older, underutilized buildings are being transformed into luxury apartments and condos. And unlike many downtowns across the country, downtown Richmond has a good mix of price points, giving everyone an opportunity to live, work, and play in Virginia’s creative capital.
