Richmond - Neighborhoods Print E-mail

Richmond is made up of a number of unique neighborhoods. It’s home to the Fan District, one of the largest designated historic residential areas in the United States. Jackson Ward, one of the nation's oldest intact African-American neighborhoods, is located here. The Urban Land Institute named Richmond’s Woodlake neighborhood the Best Community in America. Additionally, the Brandermill neighborhood was recognized as the Best Planned Community in America by Better Homes and Gardens and the National Association of Home Builders.

Other Richmond neighborhoods include:

Bon Air
Once one of the last stops on Richmond’s trolley line, Bon Air was first known as a getaway spot for the wealthiest 19th century city dwellers. Turn-of-the-century mansions still loom along the winding roads of these quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods. History has since made way for Bon Air’s modern shopping district.

Church Hill
Most famous for St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry bellowed his “Give me liberty or give me death” speech in 1775, the Church Hill neighborhood is a charming, historic artifact in itself. Renovated row-houses line cobblestone streets with lanterns and ancient oaks reminding residents of Church Hill’s 200-year-old roots.

Court End
Once the most fashionable residential neighborhoods in Richmond, Court End is home to 7
National Historic Landmarks, 3 museums, and 11 other buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. This neighborhood took its name from its lawyer residents and its close proximity to court and state public buildings. Today, this small area contains some of Richmond’s most unique and valuable architecture.
