The city’s Department of Police has taken measures to reinvigorate Neighborhood Watch programs.  Videoconferencing has been installed and implemented throughout the city to expedite the processing of arrests. Plus, a record number of police recruits have graduated from the Police Academy, thus eliminating a long existing problem of vacancy within the police workforce.

Other initiatives to enhance citizen safety include:

Robbery Unit Initiative
This initiative is designed to prevent, disrupt, and reduce robberies including street and
commercial robberies, car-jackings, and bank robberies.

PROJECT EXILE Campaign
As part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia unveiled a new aggressive community awareness campaign to combat gun violence. PROJECT EXILE is a community awareness campaign discourages possession of illegal weapons.

Drug Offenders Alliance
Drug offenders in the city’s Adult Drug Court program and graduates of the Citizens’ Police
Academy join together to prepare dinner for Medical College of Virginia patients and their families.  The focus of this collaborative effort is to advance the community rehabilitation of drug court participants and demonstrate to them the rewards of serving others.
