Aging in Place

To remain sensitive to the needs of senior adults in the community and to encourage productive independent senior living, the City of Roanoke uses state auxiliary grants to assess and assist senior adults who are living independently but who could benefit from the services of nonprofit agencies. Agencies delivering services to senior adults include the Roanoke Health Department, Blue Ridge Behavioral Health, and the League of Older Americans - Area Agency on Aging. An example of the city’s commitment to its seniors is the recently opened McCray Court, an apartment and assisted living facility for senior adults needing more care but who also want to remain in their neighborhood. The city worked with the Northwest Neighborhood Environmental Organization (NNEO) to make the project a reality by rezoning the property and closing a portion of a nearby street.
