The San José/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant Wastewater Facility is operated by the City of San José and serves eight cities located around the southern end of San Francisco Bay. These eight cities cooperate to fund South Bay Water Recycling (SBWR), which delivers high-quality non-potable recycled water to more than 400 customers in three of the cities, primarily for turf irrigation at business parks, schools and public parks. Originally developed to protect wildlife habitat, the $220 million project is now seen as a critical means of making up for a regional shortfall in potable water projected for 2020. A $26 million extension funded by a public-private partnership will soon deliver three million gallons of recycled water daily to the Metcalf Energy Center, operated by the Calpine Corporation of San José, for use in its cooling towers. This will increase the amount of wastewater diverted from San Francisco Bay to an average of about 15 million gallons daily during the peak summer warm season.
