Job Corps St. Petersburg: Job Corps is the nation’s largest residential employment and education training program for economically challenged youth, ages 16 to 24. Established in 1964, Job Corps is administered by the United States Department of Labor. The city has sold a site that it assembled for an industrial park to St. Petersburg to Job Corps, will be developed to provide a full-service job center to train youth with marketable skills that will lead to employability. Additionally, with the proceeds from the sale of this site will be used to acquire additional property for the creation of new employment opportunities. Employee Training and Education: St. Petersburg and Pinellas County continue to lead the state in Incumbent Worker Training (IWT) funding to business is FY 2005/06. Pinellas County businesses received $833,992 for over 2,500 employees. Vision 2020 and Land Development Regulations: The community vision for St. Petersburg is contained in a document entitled “St. Pete Vision 2020.” The St. Pete Vision 2020 Plan (Plan), adopted by City Council on October 17, 2002, was born from concern by neighborhood activists, elected officials, city staff and the development community over construction and renovation activities that were difficult and often yielded unsatisfactory results. Vision 2020 recognizes that redevelopment must enhance the built environment, not merely replace it with a new pattern of development. As a result of adopting the Vision 2020 Plan, one recommendation was to incorporate the Vision 2020 Plan into new Land Development Regulations. The new LDRs promote higher density mixed use development along the City’s commercial corridors which will result in hoped for mass transit opportunities, more walkable commercial and residential areas, provisions for workforce housing options and more. |
