St. Petersburg’s Police Department is responsible for overseeing the over 150 Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch programs in the city. Programs include neighborhood watches, fraud and scam education, home security surveys, personal safety advice, auto theft prevention, sexual assault and domestic violence education, Internet safety, a citizen’s police academy and education to prevent crimes against children. Programs geared toward the business community include commercial security surveys, robbery prevention, retail theft prevention, bank robbery prevention, workplace violence education, business watch associations, identity theft and credit card fraud programs. The Police Department also works with other departments in the city on “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design,” where the city targets a high crime area and makes physical changes to the environment (lighting, landscaping, etc.) to reduce crime and increase quality of life.
