St. Petersburg’s Recreation Department in partnership with the Juvenile Welfare Board sponsors a multitude of youth programs around the city including:

•  Middle School after-school recreation programs at five recreation centers in the city.
   This effort is focused on drug and alcohol prevention and was implemented through
   partnerships with Operation PAR, Family Resources and the Pinellas Arts Council.

• $499,500 from Coordinated Childcare (federal, state, and Juvenile Welfare Board Fund)  
  to allow economically disadvantaged children to attend year round Playcamp programs   
  and $333,286 that allowed 426 teens to participate in a 10-week full day Summer
  Playcamp program.

• The “St. Pete’s Values” program, a brand new youth initiative designed to reinforce self
  discipline, teamwork, achievement, honesty, respect and responsibility.

• The OOA Health Promotion Office provides health services and education for adult  
  seniors, and others in the community.

• Other recreation year-round keeps everyone active in nine city pools offering full
  aquatics and Master Swimmers, three golf courses (including Junior Golf programs)
  and the Roberts and St. Petersburg Tennis Centers.

• The city acquired land and provided Community Development Block Grants for the
  new Johnnie Ruth Clarke Health Center which offers a broad range of health services.
  The building also houses an exhibit honoring the doctors and nurses who worked in the
  original facility, the historic Mercy Hospital that served the African American
  community in the early and mid 1900s.
