Aging in Place Strategies
The city not only reaches out to citizens of all races and ethnic groups, but also to residents of all ages. Some initiatives aimed at the city's older residents include:
Senior Citizen Awareness Day
In addition to entertainment, the annual event offers senior citizens information on housing, education, senior center activities, legal assistance, and insurance. It provides the latest and most important information on issues affecting senior citizens today.
City of Tacoma Senior Centers
Senior Centers are a community focal point where older adults come together for services and activities that reflect their experience and skills, respond to their diverse needs and interests, enhance their dignity, support their independence, and encourage their involvement in and with the community.
The senior centers also serve as a resource for the entire community. They provide information on aging, support for family caregivers, and training for both professionals and students. In addition, the senior centers also address the recreational and therapeutic needs of their clientele in the promotion of programs that provide leisure and health services.
Transportation
Senior centers employ a number of vans which provide transportation for individuals from their homes to the centers for daily activity programs. The centers also offer van trips for grocery shopping, exercise programs, and community education programs.
Meals
Meals are served at the senior centers Monday through Friday. In addition, home delivered meals are available for those 60 years or older who do not have in-house assistance with food preparation or cannot prepare their own food. Seniors who cannot pay for in-center or home delivered meals will not be turned away from receiving them.
