Tacoma-Pierce County - Safety and Crime Prevention Print E-mail

Tacoma not only focuses on the medical health of its citizens, but also on their overall well-being. Along those lines, Tacoma offers a number of safety and crime prevention initiatives. For example, the Crime Free Housing program strengthens partnerships with neighborhoods, businesses, and similar programs around the region and nation.

Tacoma is the founding city for Safe Streets, a national model for neighborhood protection and enhancement. The key components to this program are crime prevention, crime deterrence, and post-crime response, which are covered in workshops offered at a citizens' police academy or by members of the crime prevention unit of the local police agency. Attendees are taught how to call in crime reports and how to work with police and housing authority security who respond to crime-related situations in their neighborhoods. This program addresses resident concerns about all types of crime and increases the level of understanding between the police and residents.
