Youth Services of Tulsa
Youth Services of Tulsa (YST) is a private, nonprofit 501 (c) (3) providing innovative programs and services to meet the diverse needs of Tulsa's youth for more than 38 years. With crisis services such as our Emergency Shelter, Safe Place program and counseling—positive development programs like Transitional Living, Youth Court and Art Studios—YST helps keep youth safe and provides tools youth need to lead healthy and productive lives.
Throughout the years, YST has developed turnkey programs and has set a precedent for youth centers and programs nation wide. During the 1970s, YST began a formal counseling program, and an adolescent emergency shelter opened to provide 24-hour temporary residence for youth with no safe place to go. During the 1980s, YST was one of two programs chosen to replicate a national model for suicide prevention. During the 1990s, YST, along with the support of QuikTrip, implemented the Safe Place Program to assist youth in avoiding becoming victims, and to provide a neighborhood access point for youth in crisis.
Tulsa Youth Court was also started in the 1990s, along with the Indian Nations Council of Boy Scouts and the Young Lawyers Division of the Tulsa County Bar Association. YST also started a Transitional Living Program for homeless youth to learn life skills to become independent and started providing services to the cities of Broken Arrow and Skiatook.
With decades of continued success, the YST has not grown successful on its own. Tulsa-area leaders and business community continue to have an influential role in building on the future success of our youth.
Girl Scouts MEC
Tulsa has many successful programs in addressing youth. One exemplary program is the Girl Scouts of the Magic Empire Council (MEC) that serves a broad spectrum of young women, ages 5 - 18. Few people know of the impact MEC makes through delivering a year round program to girls who live in Tulsa's low income public housing communities. Last year MEC served 10,741 girls and continue with their outreach efforts to over 50 percent of those young girls from low income or public housing. The outcomes of the program have been dramatic because they are delivered by nurturing caring female role models who go the extra mile to help girls see their potential in life. The MEC programs strive to empower and inspire girls on their journey to self discovery.
