Winston-Salem - Human Development Print E-mail

Winston-Salem is a vibrant, highly productive community that offers a favorable business climate, strong neighborhoods, and countless entertainment options. But community leaders know that all of a city's assets are worthless without a strong system of support for its residents. As a result, Winston-Salem provides a wide range of assistance programs including:

WinstonWorks!
This public-private cooperative effort helps create jobs for area citizens. WinstonWorks! began by asking each local business and organization to hire one additional employee and to give preference to residents who had been displaced from their jobs. WinstonWorks! has held job fairs for all types of workers, and it initiated a "buy local" campaign that encouraged consumers and businesses to throw away their catalogues and get off the internet and instead buy from local businesses where price, quality, and service are equal.

WinstonNet
In an effort to cross the "digital divide," Winston-Salem has created WinstonNet, a fiber optic network that connects all educational institutions, the city and county government, the Chamber of Commerce, churches and other non-profit groups. This aids in teaching citizens computer skills and the gives them the opportunity to use computers daily. A library Card is all that is needed to be connected.
