Winston-Salem - Neighborhoods Print E-mail

Winston-Salem is proud of its community heritage. It showcases historic tree-lined neighborhoods dotted with attractive, well-kept homes. And it also boasts popular suburban subdivisions north, south, east, and west of the downtown area.

Winston-Salem is teeming with unique neighborhoods - be they historic or new, urban or suburban. And one of the local groups helping to shape all of these neighborhoods is the Winston-Salem Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). The LISC provides training and capital to help resident-led community development corporations transform challenged neighborhoods in Winston-Salem into better places to live, work, and raise families. LISC's goal is to strengthen the capacity of neighborhoods by providing technical assistance and financing to community development corporations and other nonprofit community developers. By investing in and stimulating the growth of these community development entities, LISC helps revitalize disinvested communities, improve property values, and enrich the quality of life. It fosters a broad range of physical development projects and other initiatives that attract significant and private investment. During the past 20 years, LISC programs have invested more than $4 billion and leveraged more than $7 billion in investments in low-income communities, helped build more than 110,000 homes, and created more than 40,000 new jobs.
